Hardscaping

Hardscaping Built for Northern Minnesota

Hardscaping creates the structure of an outdoor space. Patios, walkways, retaining walls, stone steps, boulder features, and gathering areas define how people move through and use a landscape.

Woods & Water Landscaping designs and installs hardscapes throughout Duluth and Northern Minnesota, combining durable construction with materials that complement the natural character of the region.

Whether you're building a new patio, creating access across a steep property, or redesigning an entire backyard, we approach hardscaping as part of the larger landscape.

Built From the Ground Up

A finished hardscape is only as reliable as the preparation beneath it.

Northern Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles make proper excavation, base preparation, compaction, grading, and drainage especially important. Without the right foundation, patios and walkways can shift, settle, or become uneven as the seasons change.

Our hardscape projects are built with these conditions in mind.

We evaluate the existing soils, grades, drainage, and intended use of the area before installation. Appropriate aggregate bases and construction methods are then used to create a stable foundation for the finished surface.

Patios, Walkways, Stonework and More

Hardscaping can range from a simple walkway to a complete outdoor living environment.

Our projects can include paver patios, natural stone patios, walkways, retaining walls, outdoor steps, boulder walls, fire-pit areas, landscape edging, and transitions between different elevations of a property.

Material selection plays a major role in the finished character of the space. Natural stone and boulders can create an organic look that fits lake homes and wooded properties, while manufactured pavers can create cleaner lines and a more contemporary appearance.

We help select materials that work with the architecture of the home and the surrounding landscape.

Hardscaping That Connects the Landscape

We don't view patios, walls, and walkways as separate pieces.

A successful hardscape should connect naturally to the home, lawn, gardens, shoreline, driveway, and other outdoor areas. Elevation changes should feel intentional. Walkways should lead somewhere. Gathering spaces should take advantage of views and existing features of the property.

By combining hardscape installation with landscape design, excavation, grading, and planting, Woods & Water Landscaping can create complete outdoor environments instead of disconnected improvements.

We provide hardscaping services throughout Duluth, Hermantown, Two Harbors, Cloquet, Superior, and nearby communities.

From a small stone pathway to a complete backyard transformation, our goal is to build outdoor spaces that look like they belong in Northern Minnesota and are constructed to handle the conditions that come with living here.
